A strong performance by Town had everything except the clinical finish as the spoils are shared. Defensive solidity and creative football were definitely present for Garforth but a goal couldn't be found, partly because of a determined Borough backline.
The Miners began the stronger of the sides and created the first shot of the game when Jay Davis' low strike from the edge of the area deflected off Town's Sam Barker, seemingly taking it towards the roof of the net although sadly the ball flew narrowly over the woodwork.
Another good chance fell to Town in the 15th minute as Barker perfectly executed a lofted ball into the path of Charlie Marshall - a brilliant touch from Marshall fooled Borough defender Tom Sawyer, however his following effort was dragged wide of Liam Higton's far post.
Garforth maintained their early pressure and produced a handful of attempts which unfortunately lacked precision. Grimsby's frustration at their lack of offensive threat seemed to boil over when Bradley Walker aggressively threw Barker to the deck by the dugouts, yet somehow escaped any form of punishment despite the lengthy stoppage in play and uproar from the home crowd.
In the 35th minute, another well-worked move from Town between Max Bauer, Marshall and Barker led to the latter blasting another low bullet strike just past the post. Late in the first period, an injury to Matt Savage resulted in him being withdrawn from then action, leaving Alex Zachariou to take his place.
In the dying moments before the interval, a lovely individual piece of skill from Barker allowed him to curl the ball towards the top corner but an athletic diving leap from Higton gave him enough leverage to make a great fingertip save. The rebound was quickly pounced on with a Marshall header goalwards, although a mass of Borough bodies blocked the effort on the goal line.
The referee's whistle brought an end to another dominant Town half that should've been capitalised with at least an opener, however a repeat of a similar performance for the second half seemed like it would win the game. Play resumed in a much similar fashion with the Miners looking strong despite lacking a goal.
Grimsby almost broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when a sudden Adam Drury effort from distance seemed to catch everyone by surprise, nevertheless Harry Flatters was alert and tipped the strike over the bar.
A counterattack from the resulting corner from Town eventually came to Davis on the halfway line; a quick look up to see Higton off his line gave him the confidence to fire a hopeful lob from 50 yards out. His accuracy and power were almost pinpoint as the ball hit the side netting - a foot to the left would've surely made for goal of the season.
Chances kept coming for Town such as a great glancing header from Barker flying just wide in the 67th and another Barker attempt (this time from a free kick far out) forcing Higton to fist the ball away in the 70th. Furthermore, a beautiful stepover from Rinor Ejupi allowed him to find Bauer by the penalty spot for what seemed a certain goal, but the visitors' Sawyer slid to yet again clear a Town chance off the line.
Late into the action, new signing Freddy Jefferys was brought into the fold to hopefully break the deadlock on his debut. In the 88th minute, Zachariou was brought down in the Borough area to shouts of a penalty although referee Ian Johnson deemed the challenge as fair.
A nail-biting climax to the action eventually led to the final whistle, as a disappointed Garforth should've really claimed all three points at the Bannister Prentice Stadium.
