In only one change to the starting eleven, Harry Viggars returned to defence after missing the Pontefract Collieries game through suspension, replacing the unavailable Joe Smith. Also back was midfielder Dexter Ball, named as a substitute after missing three games due to being away.
Another good Bannister Prentice Stadium crowd witnessed an entertaining contest between two good footballing sides. Despite suffering an early blow when captain Kyle Sargent was forced off injured, Carlton started the better. Jamie Barkway made a last ditch challenge on 3 mins to deny Alex Howes after he found himself free with sight of goal. Town warmed into things with Charlie Marshall's low shot drawing a routine save from keeper Felix Annan on 15 mins. Five minutes later, and not for the first time in his Garforth career, Sam Barker's chasing of what seemed like a lost cause led to The Miners taking the lead. After the midfielder blocked Lewis Durow's attempted clearance 20 yards out, Marshall was quickest to react to the loose ball, nipping between scrambling defender and keeper to give us the lead.
On 28 mins Marshall almost grabbed his second when racing onto a ball over the top, his chip over Annan just over the bar. Mo Fadera was giving The Millers a torrid time down the flank, who resorted to ever more desperate measures to stop him. His cross from the right led to a chance for Barker who was kept out by good defending, then moments later Fadera's curling strike was just beyond the far post.
Fadera had an assist to his name, and Marshall a second goal, four minutes into the second half. A superb move saw Fadera make his way down the left and deliver a pin-point cross for Marshall to apply a smart finish beyond Annan to make it 2-0. It took two defenders to deny Fadera on 56 mins after a tricky run into the box as we sought a third. A couple of chances followed for the visitors to try and get back into it; Lamin Manneh shooting wide after sub Shea Thompson-Harris's run along the edge of the box, then Dean Freeman drew a save from Harry Flatters with a low shot from a right wing cross.
James Burgess replaced Matt Antcliff on 73 mins and it wasn't long before he drew the biggest applause of the day by making it three. A counter-attack saw Fadera deliver the ball to him, and after making his space, scored with an arrowed strike into the bottom corner. A fantastic moment for the forward who, despite his injury troubles last season, has played his part in Town's revived fortunes in recent years.
Two minutes after that, Carlton had one back. The long throw of Durow caused havoc in the Town box, leaving Nathan Watson to prod home at the far post.
On 81 mins the visitors' hopes of salvaging something from the game were made harder when Durow was sent off for cynically kicking out at sub Sam Cable. There was a late chance for a Burgess second when he was set up by fellow sub Dexter Ball, but his effort was at the side netting. A big chance for a nervous end to the contest came in injury time when sub Lord Marfo supplied Jack Newall deep inside the box who hit wide despite it looking easier to score.
An excellent three points for Paul Marshall's side, who've shown incredible staying power to keep our unbeaten start intact given the rigours of the Heaton Stannington tie and the busy bank holiday weekend. A few days rest before we're back on the FA Cup trail this Saturday, when former league side Bury FC visit the Bannister Prentice Stadium (kick-off 3pm).
