Captain Dan Coupland and midfielder Max Tweddle returned to the first eleven after injuries kept them out of last Saturday's FA Cup win over Northallerton, at the expense of Jay Davis and Rinor Ejupi who were named substitutes. Joe Smith also returned after illness, replacing the unavailable Mo Fadera to form a three man central defence.
The early part of the game saw the two sides trade chances - Sedge striker Joe Walton, who's hurt us often in the past, headed wide Jerome Milambo's delivery two minutes in, then visiting keeper Dylan Parkin raced out of his goal to deny Sam Barker who'd picked his way into the box.
There was then a good spell for Liversedge, but they couldn't take advantage. Walton forced a save from Harry Flatters at the near post, before a header from the rebound was blocked off the line by Max Tweddle. A 20-yard strike from Jaanai Gordon was just wide after Adam Clayton's delivery was half-cleared, then Flatters kept out Walton again, this time holding a point-blank range header.
It was down the right wing that Town looked most likely to hurt the visitors, and after withstanding the pressure, employed this route to gain the lead six minutes before the break. A through ball found Matt Antcliff who lifted the ball over the onrushing Parkin to find the net and keep going his recent fine form in front of goal.
As in the first half, the visitors continued to have more of the possession, but as time went on it was Garforth who were the more effective with it, coupled with a solid display at the back. Antcliff drew a routine save from Parkin on 55 mins after exchanging passes down the right with Alex Zachariou. Defender and keeper then combined to maintain our lead two mins later; Jamie Barkway clearing off the line Jack Dyche's shot after Flatters denied Jack Crook. Down the other end moments later Antcliff almost grabbed a second when he chipped Parkin once again, but this time his effort hit the crossbar.
After a couple of chances for the visitors went over the bar, substitute Sam Cable then came agonisingly close on 75 mins after getting the better of two defenders. Parkin was out of his goal again, but Cable's chip lacked pace and the Sedge defenders scrambled back in time to clear. Then came the explosive introduction of Jay Davis on 78 mins. With only his second touch, he unleashed a thunderbolt from thirty yards which went in off the post and registered an early contender for the goal of the season.
Liversedge were increasingly restricted to shots from range, with sub Desmond Amponsah putting a low shot just wide on 81 mins. A minute from time Davis struck again to make the points safe and complete a first win in seven years against our neighbours. Played in by Cable, he beat a man and then finished calmly for his second of the game.
A fantastic start to life back at the higher level which will do much to instill confidence in the players going into a busy couple of weeks ahead. Next up is a journey up the A1 to Consett on Tuesday (kick-off 7:45pm).
