Preview - home to Newton Aycliffe (29/03)

Robert Osborne28 Mar - 15:00

The Miners face the Cliffe for the second time this month

With only three home matches remaining this season, Town will look to put in a performance against a Newton Aycliffe side pushing for a play-off spot.

The Cliffe may have run out 2-0 victors in the rearranged reverse fixture earlier this month, but the Miners have been difficult to beat at the Bannister Prentice Stadium recently, having lost just once in their last nine games, with that defeat coming against league leaders Cleethorpes Town.

Newton currently sit in the final play-off place at 5th in the NPL East table in amongst a fiercely close race for the play-offs. Only two points separate fourth-placed Belper Town and eighth-placed Carlton Town, meaning any two of five potential teams could join the likes of Emley AFC and Dunston in the battle for promotion.

Highly proficient goalscoring has been the basis of their success this year; an unmatched 84 goals scored throughout the campaign with four players notching into double figures has outlined them as a lethal force in the attacking third. However, the flipside of 59 goals shipped has held them back from a higher position and has made for some frantic action over their season.

A solid run of 13 points from their last six fixtures has helped them climb into the top five, although a 2-1 defeat to fellow play-off chasers Stocksbridge Park Steels last weekend prevented the opportunity for the Cliffe to pull away slightly. Midfielder Joe Ferguson was sent off for Newton and will be suspended for the Garforth clash.

Club top scorer Jake Petitjean was noticeably absent from the Steels encounter but the nature of this absence is publicly unknown. Despite that, the Cliffe have much firepower at their disposal with the likes of Liam Jarvie, Dean Thexton and Liam Adamson - the latter having scored against Town a few weeks ago. The quartet have scored 59 of the squad's 84 league goals.

Returning to the Miners, late goals from Max Tweddle and Sam Denton helped snatch a 2-1 win against Sherwood Colliery last Saturday. The incredible comeback ended an unwanted run of four matches without scoring and showed the spirit and determination of Paul Marshall's side even with many players still out injured.

A depleted team meant only four substitutes were named for the Colliery fixture, nevertheless Saturday should see the return of Charlie Marshall to the matchday squad and potentially one or two changes.

The end of the season is rapidly approaching, yet the Miners will look to finish on a high and build on last weekend's victory for their final six fixtures.

Kick Off is at 3pm
