Preview - home to Cleethorpes Town (22/02)

Robert Osborne21 Feb - 18:00

The Miners return home to face a tough test from the table-toppers

After a convincing 3-1 victory against local rivals Bradford Park Avenue in midweek, the Miners have to challenge league leaders Cleethorpes Town at the Bannister Prentice Stadium. Although the visitors currently are on a winning streak of five matches, a positive performance and result would definitely make a huge statement to the rest of the NPL East.

Despite seeming destined to become champions at this stage, the Owls have been susceptible to a few surprising defeats throughout the campaign. Three of their four losses this season have been to teams in the lower half of the table, but an incredible 21 wins from 29 games certainly marks them as a fierce opponent.

One such win was against Garforth back in November; the 4-1 result made for a tough day at the office for the Miners. Coincidentally, Cleethorpes were on another winning streak of five matches prior to that match, therefore Garforth may face a side of similar confidence.

Striker Josh Walker and winger Curtis Bateson have been lethal for the visitors this season, scoring a combined 28 goals between them in league competition with two of Bateson's having been scored in the reverse fixture. Bateson also notched another on Tuesday, as the Owls dispatched Consett 3-1 to take them four points clear of second-placed Emley.

Furthermore, on Wednesday Owls manager Craig Rouse signed a contract extension to stay at the club a further three years after an impressive first year in charge and will surely want his squad to continue their purple patch of form.

The Miners are under no illusion that a lacklustre performance on Saturday will be punished. However, the derby day win against Bradford PA on Tuesday demonstrated the sheer quality and determination within the side that has helped them rise the table to 7th. Sublime goals from Rinor Ejupi, Charlie Marshall and Jay Davis completed the victory which has kept Garforth's play-off hopes alive.

Manager Paul Marshall spoke after the match about the Cleethorpes test and said: "If we play our game, we can beat anybody. We don't have the luxury [of having a big squad] so we have to work with what we've got, and we seem to be doing a decent job of that."

No new injury concerns arose after the midweek clash for Garforth ahead of what seems a monstrous task. Nevertheless, the Miners will aim to go toe-to-toe with the league's best and deliver a good showing on home soil.
