Next match - home to Pontefract Collieries on Tuesday (26th November)

Jonathan McGourty25 Nov - 20:03

After the postponement of Town's last two matches, the Miners return to action in the West Riding Cup. Match preview by Robert Osborne

Following a spell of heavy snowfall, the conditions seem to have improved in recent days ahead of the midweek clash against Pontefract Collieries at the Bannister Prentice Stadium. The Colls currently are reigning champions in the West Riding County Cup after an impressive run last season and a tough local derby should be on the cards for the Miners.

Tuesday's opponents currently sit 13th in the NPL East table in comparison to Town in 9th; a drop off from their play-off finish in 4th in the previous campaign but the Colls certainly are strong in cup competition. Last season saw Pontefract emphatically triumph over Knaresborough Town with a 4-0 victory in the final to claim the County Cup for the first time in the club's history.

As champions, the side have received a bye into the second round of the tournament. Earlier this season, both sides met in the league in a close 2-2 draw at the Hunters Stadium, as goals from Mo Fadera and Jamie Barkway equalled out a brace from Colls' Jack Boyle. Prior, the teams had not met since 2022 when the Collieries edged a 1-0 win against Garforth with a controversial penalty in the FA Cup preliminary round.

In their last match, Pontefract held play-off contenders North Ferriby to a 1-1 draw in a closely contested battle. Skipper Jack Greenhough proved to be a rock at the back as he claimed the MOTM trophy after a great defensive display and will likely prove to be a tough obstacle for Town on Tuesday. Striker Jack Boyle currently sits Colls' top scorer in the league with 6 goals to his name, who will look to replicate his double past the Miners back in August.

Returning to Garforth, an eventful 4-2 victory over fellow NPL East side Brighouse FC in October saw the Miners advance into the second round of the County Cup. Town have a historical pedigree in the competition, having won the trophy four times with the last of those in 2010. In a season which has seen Town make a solid start to Step 4 football, an additional cup run definitely is within their reach.

The forced break from action should allow Paul Marshall to start a refreshed and strong side, with no known injury concerns affecting his squad ahead of the local derby at the Bannister Prentice Stadium.

Kick-off at the Bannister Prentice Stadium is 7.45pm.
