Milton Turner and Chris Howarth returned from injury with Ben Small and Dempsey Smith on the bench.
Town were ahead after only 8 mins. Paul Walker received the ball from Matt Dempsey just outside the box on the right and rifled the ball past Wakefield keeper Lawrence Matthewson at his near post.
On 15 mins Dempsey himself tried his luck but he chipped just over the crossbar. Four mins later Adam Priestley made a determined run down the left flank and shot from a narrow angle but this was comfortably caught by Matthewson.
The visitors with their quick passing game then had their own spell of pressure; on 24 mins a corner kick saw the ball swing across the box and headed down towards goal but only to Ben Higginson in the Town goal. Two minutes later a good move involving Tom Denton and James Stansfield (?) saw a dangerous ball come into the box but Higginson was again quickest to it.
Lawrance Hunter almost put the Miners 2-0 up on 40 mins. A cross from the right found Priestley who headed the ball down to the ex-Wakefield man but his effort went just over the bar.
On 48 mins a long ball upfield from the town keeper found Priestley who beat his man and charged into the box but his effort was diverted wide by the keeper’s feet.
Town were often guilty of giving possession away in a game which was scrappy at times. Failure to clear our lines on 57 mins saw the ball come to Bears captain Wes Milnes who was unlucky to see his lobbed effort go narrowly wide of the upright. Eight minutes later Nick Hegarty on the left flank put in a searching ball across but it just evaded target man Tom Denton.
On 68 mins a great one-two between Priestley and Walker saw Wakka race clear of the visiting defence but the linesman judged him offside. Town had a shout for penalty only a minute later when Walker looked to have been fouled from behind but the appeals were waved away by the referee. Priestley then had a great chance to get on the scoresheet when he charged into the area from the right but the ball seemed to run away from him and into the Wakefield keeper’s arms.
The visitors applied some more pressure on the Town goal later in the half but in the end couldn't find the target and the Miners managed to see the game out. A battling victory which sees us jump five places into 9th. One negative from the game was the withdrawal of Chris Howarth on 74 mins with an injury, let’s hope for a swift recovery.
