Narrow defeat for Miners.

A brave and organised showing from Garforth wasn't enough to avoid defeat to title-chasing Tadcaster, for whom a first half goal from Tom Corner proved to be enough.

Town set out to contain the home side and break quickly whenever they could. Striker Mark Simpson was named as a substitute in favour of Tim Robertson. Goalkeeper Dominic Smith made a return between the sticks and Chris Simpkins was given a start in place of Khalid Alali.

The Brewers registered their first shot on target as early as four mins in when captain Jimmy Beadle and Conor Sellers had shots blocked by Luke McCrum and Dominic Smith respectively; the second being parried to Tom Corner who's effort was deflected wide. A good spell for the home side saw Smith called into action again, denying Jonathan Greening's curling free-kick. The loose ball fell to a well-placed Corner who smashed over the bar. Smith then saved a Josh Greening back-post header and shortly after danger man Sellers volleyed narrowly wide from a headed clearance. On 19 mins Corner had the ball in the net with a header from a left wing delivery, but was penalised for shoving Smith into the post.

Garforth's first chance finally arrived on 25 mins when Danny Harris supplied Curtly Martin-Wyatt to turn his man and lash narrowly past the far post. Two minutes later though the home side had their goal when Josh Greening's shot was blocked, the ball finding Corner who scooped into the bottom corner. Tim Robertson gave home keeper Gary Stevens something to think about on 31 mins after working inside and forcing a save at his near post.

A couple of chances followed for Tadcaster towards the end of the half, but the main talking point in this end of the field was a pigeon who'd settled itself near the 18 yard box and appeared to be enjoying the best view in the house. Any pigeon fanciers present among the 200+ crowd were called upon at half time to try and shoo it away, but it was staying put.

The home side continued their passing game into the second half and on 52 mins Josh Greening headed wide Sellers' left-wing cross. A similar chance fell Garforth's way moments later when Martin-Wyatt headed wide when picked out by Robertson and the result was the same on 55 mins from a Robertson free-kick. Simpson was brought on for Spencer Lund on 65 mins to boost the attack, Tadcaster manager Billy Miller responding by bringing on Mark's former strike partner Nick Black.

Town were battling well, with The Brewers now turning to random outbursts of music from a loudspeaker to keep the home fans entertained. With Simpson on the field we were more able to break at speed, but were thwarted repeatedly (and more than once incorrectly) by the offside flag. One such incident came when Martin-Wyatt had the ball in the net from Harris' header but was ruled out.

Black almost recorded a goal against his old club five mins from time, his low effort bringing an excellent save by Smith; but arguably the biggest chance of the half fell to Simpson a minute later when sent clear by Harris and agonizingly clipping the top of the crossbar. Almost a Worksop away moment there to cheer the away support who'd turned out in good numbers and by now were hopeful of an upset. Sadly despite our efforts it wasn't to be and the Brewers were able to see out the win to move back to the top of the table.
