Due to a potential kit colour clash The Miners dusted the cobwebs off last season’s purple, white and black away strip.
It was Albion who started the game on the front foot but once Town settled we were the first to carve out a clear-cut chance. Good work down the left by Curtly Martin-Wyatt on 7 mins saw him shoot tamely at Albion keeper Kyle Trennery. Three minutes later Joe Barden broke clear and tried to lob a stranded Tom Osborne but his effort was wide of the post. In an end-to-end spell Trennery saved Ashley Preece's low shot after excellent play by Martin-Wyatt and Spencer Lund, then Osborne blocked a powerful drive from Lewis Morgan from Omar Habeeb’s free kick.
On 23 mins Martin-Wyatt was denied by a good save from Trennery and from the resulting corner the big striker was beaten again, this time by the crossbar from a near-post header. Three mins later he was causing problems again when his shot from the byeline was saved at the near post.
On 32 mins it was the Lions’ turn to trouble the crossbar; Mohammed Kaba with a great strike from 30 yards which had Osborne beaten. A couple more chances followed for the home side but they couldn’t hit the target, Jordan Hendrie half-volleyed over the bar from a loose ball and then Marcus Edwards smashed over from just outside the box. Curtly was in again down the other end, his glancing header from Conway’s delivery claimed by Trennery.
Five mins into the second half Martin-Wyatt’s great cross into the box required an equally good headed clearance from Sam Bradley. On 53 mins though the deadlock was finally broken when Ferdinand Annor stole in to head Temour Khan's delivery into the bottom corner of the net.
Only a few minutes later Garforth were denied a glorious opportunity to equalise when George Conway looked to have been brought down in the area by ex-Town defender Asif Hussain but referee Ian Johnston waved away the appeals for a penalty.
On 70 mins Edwards thought he had grabbed his side's second when heading home over Osborne but the offside flag was raised.
The final chances of the game fell Garforth’s way but a goal just wouldn’t come; Luke McCrum's dangerous bouncing ball deep into the box had to be tipped over by Trennery, and a mistake between Albion defence and keeper almost let in sub Mark Simpson but Kaba managed to recover and clear away for a corner.
Similar to the Cleethorpes game last weekend another hard-working performance by Adie Costello’s team going unrewarded, the hosts proving to be a shade more clinical in front of goal. Something to work on before our next game in a week, but things are certainly better than a month ago when this kind of fixture may have ended in a heavy defeat.
