Spirited Miners peg back in-form Brid in blood and thunder clash on Cedar Ridge.

The visitors started the better side, with front-men Joel Sutton and Will Waudby looking dangerous. The two combined two mins in when Sutton skewed wide Waudby’s free kick. Andy Norfolk was denied surely testing Ben Hunter shortly after but Dane Winn made a crucial clearance. Another good chance came Norfolk's way on 7 mins, Hunter getting down to save his shot to the far post.

Garforth’s first chance came on 14 mins when Jordan Outerbridge put through Curtly Martin-Wyatt. Brid keeper Jamie Hitchcock was there to deny him but with the big striker bearing down on him could only smash a clearance out to his left for a throw in. A good delivery from Tim Robertson ended in another chance for Martin-Wyatt moments later but his header was straight at Hitchcock.

Sinmi Oyebanji had a good effort deflected wide for a corner on 27 mins but the rest of the chances in the half fell to the Seasiders, resulting in the scoring being opened. Ryan Nicholls headed past the far post from a Sutton corner two mins later and Hunter made an excellent save to keep out Waudby’s wind assisted strike. It was 1-0 to Bridlington though five mins from the break when Waudby’s free kick was cleared straight to Sutton who nodded in past Hunter.

The second half began with a couple more chances for Oyebanji; three mins in having a shot deflected wide, and good play between the Nigerian and Spencer Lund on 54 mins ended in the former shooting narrowly wide of the target.

Sutton and Waudby remained a threat at the back, and on 57 mins Sutton’s low effort was saved by Hunter at the second attempt. On 62 mins Sutton put through Norfolk who beat an onrushing Hunter but could only fire against the side netting. The Miners had been guilty of giving the ball away and one may have wondered where an equalizer might come from, but that all changed on 67 mins when Town got themselves back into the game. A superb piece of play saw Lund on the left pick out Outerbridge at the far post who moved inside and stroked home at Hitchcock’s near post for his first club goal.

The goal was to set up a barnstorming last half hour. Sadly the hard-won parity only lasted a couple of mins when a Brid attack ended in Waudby being upended in the area by Jassim Alali, referee Paul Lister pointing to the spot. Sutton was the man to step up and, unlike in August when his spot kick was hit high enough to nestle nicely on the tower of Bridlington Priory, coolly despatched it to Hunter’s right.

The Town keeper did brilliantly to prevent it being 3-1 moments later, denying a Norfolk shot with his legs.

After his strike at Armthorpe the other week Oyebanji already has one entry in the goal of the season video, but he managed to better even that one on 81 mins to mark his 75th appearance for the club. Stepping up for a free kick on the left 30 yards out he smashed home an absolute beauty across Hitchcock into the top corner to bring us level once more.

From then things sadly turned ugly when two mins later Sutton was sent off for a two footed challenge on Martin-Wyatt in the middle of the park. Referee Mr Lister was then forced to deal with the resulting melée involving most of the remaining players but with words also said between the two dugouts. Brid Goalkeeping coach Nick Baxter was sent to the stand and the substituted Robertson booked for their part in the unpleasant scenes.

The football got underway once more and it looked like Adie Costello’s battling side had succumbed to a late winner akin to the Pickering game the other week when the defence switched off at Waudby’s corner, allowing Norfolk to head home past Hunter to jubilant celebrations from the visitors. With five mins of injury time given things didn’t end there though and the Miners showed incredible spirit to peg the Seasiders back for a third time only moments later. A foray up front ended in Mr Lister awarding another penalty after Khalid Alali was fouled in the box. Martin-Wyatt was the man in the spotlight, but showed no nerves to fire coolly into the corner. 3-3 was how it stayed but in the last kick of the game the visitors were reduced to nine men when the man who looked to have given his side a dramatic victory a short time ago was sent off for a second bookable offence after pulling Outerbridge’s shirt. The East Yorkshire side may well be glad to see the back of us this season after four team members sent from the field in the two games played.

Whilst Brid had the edge in terms of quality, Adie’s men simply refused to throw in the towel and a hard-earned point was the reward for a gritty and determined showing.
