Things got off to the worst possible start for Garforth as Clipstone put themselves ahead only 40 seconds in. A cross from ex-Garforth man Liam Royles on the left caught the defence napping, leaving Alec Denton to convert from close range.
In the first half Town actually had most of the chances, but it mattered little in a clinical showing from the hosts who simply converted three out of the four that came their way. On 5 mins Mark Simpson headed wide a good delivery from Luke Mangham and shortly after Curtly Martin-Wyatt fired just over the bar from the edge of the box.
The hosts benefited from a large slice of fortune on 15 mins to double their lead. A headed clearance from a corner dropped to Jahmal Smith who's volley took two deflections to find its way past a wrong-footed Ben Hunter.
The Miners were able to give the hosts a few problems at the back, in particular Martin-Wyatt, but no player could find the finish and at times were guilty of playing too much football up front. On 17 mins the striker got the better of his man and raced clear to go one-on-one with Steve Hernandez in the Clipstone goal but Hernandez was able to block his shot.
On 23 mins we had a mountain to climb. Royles found Smith unmarked in the box to round Hunter and place in the empty net. Royles himself almost grabbed a fourth for his side two mins before the break, receiving the ball in the area and forcing a decent save from Hunter.
Town started the second half trying to find a way back into the game and Martin-Wyatt almost gave us a lifeline six mins in when his header from Mangham's cross was cleared straight back to him but his second attempt from the rebound was over the bar.
All hope was lost however on 55 mins when the Nottinghamshire side were awarded a penalty after Tim Robertson hauled down Brad Jones inside the area. Striker Denton stepped up and made no mistake, converting to Hunter's left. Two mins later it was 5-0 when an excellent one-two between Smith and Denton cut the defence open leaving Smith to smash home and complete his hattrick.
The Miners didn't give up on what would now be reducing the arrears, but couldn't find a way past Hernandez. Simpson forced a save from the keeper on 69 mins after being put through and he was there again to deny Martin-Wyatt's 20 yarder ten mins later. Down at the other end things could've been more embarrassing in the last 10 mins when Hunter saved from sub Alex Nightingale and fellow sub Jack Hall smashed a shot against the underside of the bar from close range. In injury time both Mangham and Martin-Wyatt were denied by Hernandez to sum up a fruitless afternoon.
A bad day at the office for Graham Nicholas' team which they'll need to recover from quickly for Tuesday's tricky local derby vs Yorkshire Amateur in the County Cup.
