Marvellous Miners Smash Sedge for Six

Braces from Mark Simpson and Curtly Martin-Wyatt plus one from Andy Hawksworth and Luke Mangham helped Garforth to an emphatic win at Clayborn.

It was a slow start for Town however with Liversedge having nearly all the possession in the first 10 mins. Kieran Corley made the first chance of the game five mins in when he ran through the defence and shot over the bar and shortly afterwards the same man volleyed over inside the box from a free kick. On 9 mins they were ahead when Joel Farrar's 20 yard-drive was parried by Ben Hunter straight to Corley who rounded him and slotted home.

Town were yet to have any real spell of possession but the goal served as a wake-up call and our attack sprung into life. A superb run through the middle by Mangham on 16 mins saw him put through Simpson but his shot lacked power and the Sedge defence were able to clear off the line. A free-kick won on the left three mins later gave The Miners a real opportunity to level things up and it was one they grabbed with both hands. Tim Robertson played it on the floor to captain Hawksworth who's drive took a deflection and beat Sedge keeper William O'Carrol at his near post.

From then on The Miners took control of the game and the scoreline really could've been double figures. The home defence struggled to cope with Mangham's pace, and with Robertson and Hawksworth venturing forward we had options all over the park. And it was Robertson with another assist on 23 mins. Chasing a seemingly lost cause, he made a brilliant challenge on the byeline and fed inside to Simpson who made no mistake this time, smashing the ball into the top corner from just inside the box.

On 30 mins Martin-Wyatt had his first effort on goal when supplied by Danny Harris, O'Carrol making the save. A minute later though Garforth put themselves further ahead when Hawksworth made a run down the right and delivered to Simpson at the back post to tuck in for his 10th goal of the season. Moments before half time Ashley Preece almost made it 4-1 when set up by Martin-Wyatt at the edge of the box but shot narrowly wide.

As in the first half the first chance after the break fell to the home side; on 48 mins Tinotenda Chibharo had a header saved by Hunter from Corley's delivery from wide.

Normal service was soon resumed however on 51 mins. A flowing move ended in Mangham unselfishly squaring to Martin-Wyatt who advanced and powered home between keeper and defender. Curtly had his goal, but almost turned provider two mins later when he beat the offside trap and delivered into the six yard box but the ball flashed agonisingly wide with an awaiting Simpson unable to connect. On 54 mins a Mangham cross was cleared straight to Hawksworth who blazed over the bar. Great work from Martin-Wyatt on the left created Garforth's fifth on 63 mins, patiently picking out Mangham at the far post to slot home for his 7th goal in as many games where his team has found the net.

The hosts somehow escaped a goalmouth scramble on 71 mins, the defence clearing efforts from Robertson and Martin-Wyatt on the line. Mangham probably should've added another five mins later from Harris' delivery, his downward header going just wide. Hawksworth almost grabbed another himself on 78 mins from another excellent Martin-Wyatt ball in, his header found the net but was chalked off by the offside flag.

A first Robertson goal since 3rd January would've been thoroughly deserved, and he was unlucky on 85 mins when his 20 yard free kick was kept out of the top corner by O'Carrol. A minute later though it was six, a quickly taken free kick saw Hawksworth pick out Martin-Wyatt to score with a diving header. Mangham (who probably should've had a hattrick) was denied by a good save from O'Carroll on 86 mins and the hosts mustered a chance shortly before time when Corley made a decent run down the middle but shot wide from about 30 yards.

In the early 00s this was a venue at which we often came away with nothing. So in contrast, yesterday was a biggest ever win over our opponents and our biggest away victory since the 7-0 at Winterton in September 2013. A result which propels The Miners to 4th in the table and puts us in great stead for two big cup games in the week ahead.
