In a competitive start to the game new signing Liam Hardey shot just wide from 25 yards on 7 mins and on 13 mins Ben Hunter saved a close range diving header from Runcorn's James McShane after being supplied by Paul Shanley. Lone striker Curtly Martin-Wyatt shot wide from similar distance to Hardy shortly after when picked out by Danny Harris' incisive cross-field pass.
Shanley was a threat throughout down the left and was the architect of most of the home side's attacks. He was duly involved with their opening goal. A break down the left by the captain saw Hunter charge out of his goal and with the keeper stranded Shanley passed inside to McShane to place into the empty net.
Hardey came close to giving us a quick equalizer moments later after good work by Martin-Wyatt, his strike from distance just about held by Daniel Lever in the Runcorn goal. Hunter made a great stop with his feet to deny Shanley on 38 mins but the last couple of chances of the half came Town's way. Lever saved a Martin-Wyatt strike at his near post and in the last kick of the half Jack McCarthy headed inches over the bar.
A goalmouth scramble on 64 mins saw Gareth Grant denied by a defensive block, but arguably the real game-changer came seconds later. A counter attack saw Spencer Lund race clear, but he opted to try and play in Martin-Wyatt when he probably should've been more selfish. The ball bobbled out of play and another chance had gone.
The Cheshire side seized upon the squandered opportunity to further their lead. On 66 mins Adam McKillop found McShane who fired into the corner of the net for his second of the game.
Hunter made another good stop on 76 mins when he turned a Grant effort around the post, and Tim Robertson came close with a free kick five mins later going inches over the bar. Moments after however the home side made certain their passage into the third round. Grant was picked out unmarked in the box and scored at the second attempt after his first was blocked by Hunter.
Three-nil was a little harsh but things could've got worse in the final few mins as the Town keeper was forced to make a number of saves, the most notable from Shanley two mins from time, keeping his curling strike out of the top corner, and making a double stop to keep out Mark Keddie.
Certainly an improvement on Wednesday evening and still plenty of spirit from the Garforth players, but with the goals seemingly drying up and 12 now conceded in the last three, a few things for Adie to work on in the coming weeks.
