Miners edge Ammers in thrilling cup tie.

Both sides looked to attack from the off in a no-holds barred contest, and whilst games against our neighbours are rarely routine affairs, a spectator not in the know couldn't have told a division difference between the two.

Tim Robertson almost opened the scoring on 3 mins after a good break from Spencer Lund. His deft chip beat Suruwa Bojang in the Ammers goal but went just wide of the post. Shortly after Craig Heard's strike from the edge of the box was tipped over by Ben Hunter.

Lund would mark a return to the first eleven with a man of the match performance, and it was fitting the midfielder also grabbed his first ever goal for the club in a 36th appearance. On 13 mins Luke Mangham made a brilliant run forward and squared to Lund who shot past Bojang from just inside the box to put Town ahead.

Ten minutes later though our neighbours were level in somewhat controversial circumstances. A free kick awarded about 25 yards out was allowed to be taken without referee Ken Haydock's whistle and with Hunter still organising his wall, ex-Garforth defender Glen Wood curled a sweet strike in off the post. Straight from kick-off Lund looked to be tripped in the area but protests were waved away by Haydock. On 29 mins Mangham was unlucky not to restore Garforth's lead when his powerful effort rattled the underside of the crossbar.

The chances kept coming for both teams and the Harehills side turned the game on its head on 39 mins when Heard's header from a corner was flicked into the net by Joel Hughes. Ammers finished the half the stronger team, with Heard and Thomas Rose in particular causing the Miners' defence problems.

The introduction of Curtly Martin-Wyatt and the return of Sinmi Oyebanji however gave Town new impetus in the second half and Mark Simpson almost levelled up the tie on 51 mins when he tried to chip a wandering Bojang but his strike went just past the far post. Hughes probably should've done better on 59 mins when supplied in space by Rose, but blazed over the bar. Hughes missed another chance to probably settle things shortly after when getting on the end of a cross from the left but skewed wide.

Town seized on these missed opportunities to grab the equalizer. On 64 mins a great run by Simpson saw him put through Mangham to round Bojang and place into the empty net. In a good spell Simpson chipped onto the roof of the net after being set up by Lund and Martin-Wyatt forced a save from the keeper after characteristically making space for himself just inside the box.

On 71 mins Hunter saved from Ammers substitute Adam Shaw to keep the score level after another decent run by Rose and eight mins later Simpson fired past the far post after more good work from Martin-Wyatt. Ex-Garforth striker Dan Sheriffe almost made an immediate impact after coming on as substitute with ten minutes remaining, his strike being palmed onto the post by Hunter.

With the scoring still level and the County FA dispensing with extra time in the competition, were Town supporters to see a first penalty shoot-out since the infamous one at Curzon Ashton back in 2012? The question was answered in the last five minutes with two more goals to book our place in the next round. On 86 mins Martin-Wyatt again held the ball up, his low shot rebounded off the far post and amid a goalmouth scramble the ball came to Simpson who found the corner of the net from a narrow angle. Two mins later it was 4-2 when Simpson did well to ride some heavy challenges down the right wing and find Martin-Wyatt who slid the ball home.

Our visitors weren't quite finished though and Rose had his goal deep into injury time after making another foray down the left and shooting across Hunter into the net. Luckily for Garforth, Haydock blew the final whistle moments later, ensuring a first win in ten years against our local rivals. A spirited win for the Miners after the agonies of Saturday and another home tie to look forward to in the second round.
